Rebecca Garrard, 72, widow of Charles Garrard, Sr., was born August 19, 1938, Lexington, Kentucky, to the late John Sidney and Celia Washington Hill. She departed this life Sunday, October 31, 2010. She was a graduate of Dunbar Senior High School "Class of '56'" and also served as the Treasurer. She accepted Christ at an early age and became a lifetime, dedicated member of the Starof Bethlehem Baptized Pentecostal Church of Holiness, under the leadership of the late Bishop Raymond Ross, Sr. and presently Bishop Raymond Ross, Jr. She loved the Lord and was always willing to leand a hand. She served as member of the Usher Board, Missionary, Treasurer of Women's Support Group and mainly was the Church Cook, always looking out for everyone and making sure everyone was "full and happy."
She attended Business school and was Secretary for the Kentucky Department of Social Services. She owned a gift shop for a while, then in 1990 became full-time cook with Second Presbyterian Church for their Meals on Wheels program and remained with them until her recent illness. Cooking was her joy and she became very interested at a young age by watching her Mother. Some of her hobbies were counted cross-stitch, upholstering and alterations.
She was a very political woman and with her love for Barack Obama, was able to experience the 2008 election of this country's first African-American President. She was also blessed to experience first-hand the Inauguration of our 44th President of the U.S. in Washington, D.C.
She was preceded in death by one son, Barry Garth (Annette), three siblings, John Hill, Esther Parsons and Ruth Samuels, and one grandson, Dwayne Garth. She leaves to cherish her memory two sons, William Garth, California, Steven (Sherry) Garth, two daughters, Linda C. Garth and Roslyn (Marshall) Mays, all of Lexington; three step-sons, Rodney Lewis, Charles E. Garrard, Jr., Neal Garrard and one step-daughter, Deana Garrard-Thiaw; three brothers, George M., James and Charles (Gladys) Hill; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins; two special friends, Katie Canada and Carol Wood and other relatives and friends.
